10. Baptism
Genesis
6:18; 7:1 - Note
"thee (singular)
have I found righteous," i.e. Noah alone was found
righteous,
but his whole house was saved, c.f. the waters of baptism in 1 Peter
3:20-21.
Genesis 20:4,5 -
Abimelech's
integrity is equated with
the nation's integrity. Note v.7 the threatening of death not
only to Abimelech but his family for his potential sin.
Genesis 26:4,5 -
The promise
is to the son
(Isaac) and his descendants, for the faith of the father (Abraham).
(cf. also the prophesies to David and the descendants of his kingly
line).
Exodus 12:7,13 - "And
they
shall
take of the blood, and strike it on the two side
posts
and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat
it.. And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses
where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass
over
you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you,
when I smite the land of Egypt."
Note here that the
whole household is saved.
Deuteronomy 4:37
- "And because he loved thy fathers, therefore he chose their
seed
after them, and brought thee out in his sight with his mighty power out
of Egypt."
Deuteronomy 10:15
- "Only the LORD had a delight in thy fathers to love them,
and he
chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this
day."
Joshua 7:24,25 -
Achan's
sons and daughters
were killed for Achan's sin. Note here a covenant
responsibility.
1 Samuel 31:6
& 1 Chronicles
10:6 - note that
what is referred to as "all his house" was Saul's
entire army!!
2 Samuel 21:6 - Seven
of Saul's
sons were killed
for the sin of
the father.
Job 17:5; 21;19 - Men's
iniquities are often laid
up for their children.
Psalm 106:38 - Children
here are described
as "innocent
blood."
Psa. 137:9 - The
little ones are dashed against
the stones for the parents' sins.
Isaiah 59:21 - "As
for me,
this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon
thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out
of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of
thy seed’s seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever."
Isaiah 62:5 - "For
as a
young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons marry thee: and as the
bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee."
Isaiah 65:23 -
"and their
offspring
with them."
Jeremiah 11:15 -
"holy flesh."
Jeremiah 31:1 -
Note God will
be God of all
the families of Israel. Note this especially as
vv31-34 are usually
quoted by Baptists in their favour!
Jeremiah 32:39 -
"and their
children
after them."
Ezekiel 14;22 - The
sons and
daughters described as "a remnant" will be saved
(but not those of Noah, Daniel and
Job in their theoretical being in the land).
Ezekiel 23:37 -
"their sons,
whom
they bare unto me."
Hosea 5:7 -
"strange children"
begotten by backsliding Israel.
